![]() Outcast/Academy is probably the best example of this that I can think of. They would come out only a year or so later & be just different enough that the core game is able to appeal to more than one type of preferred playstyle at once. Oh, but the actual point that I wanted to make is that I really appreciate how games used to sometimes get these "companion releases" that were more than an expansion or a mod, but a bit less than a full sequel. It's even more cranked up in DF2: Jedi Knight, which is one of my favorite action-adventure games of all time, specifically because of the excessive need for exploration and secret areas lol. (number one being chopping up foes with g_saberrealisticcombat 1, of course) Literally my 2nd favorite thing about Outcast Outcast had me looking in every nook and cranny to figure out where to go Kyle's and Luke's commentary about your force alignment gets reused, even if you only have LS powers, Kyle will praise you three times throughout the game that you "kept the balance" (how?), and even if you only upgrade DS powers, at the end, Jaden only suddenly turns bizarrely evil if you kill Rosh. ![]() The only criticism I would have of Jedi Academy is the force alignment. Of course not every mission can be a banger (Vjun is really cool, but Bast Castle Underworks is kinda bad and it all drags), but even if you don't like a mission, you most likely can skip it! And I think it works great for the most part! I really liked the lorebuilding in some of them (like Yalara mission, which adds a rivalry between two NPC factions, really interesting), some of them (Byss comes to mind instantly) feel very Oucast-y and some hold up really well visually, Chandrilla in particular. The game often tries to spice it up, such as the Merchant Rescue mission, the Bomb diffusal, the Rancor warehouse chase, the speeder bike mission etc. You have a purpose in each mission and different from Outcast (seemingly half of which takes place on that Cairn outpost/shipyard thing), there is a great variety of SW locations. Jedi Academy's missions nearly all have a great length and I love some of the theming. He can be compared to Juhani from KOTOR I think.Īs for the missions, I really hated the more absurd puzzles in the first half of outcast. ![]() People hate Rosh, but I think he is a tragic and compelling character, exploring themes of falling down a hole after failing on unrealistic expectations for himself. Jaden, even though there is a lot of customization (perhaps primitive nowadays, but still really effin cool), is even characterized well through some monologues. Kyle is much more mature from his previous experience and in a way resembles Ahsoka (Ahsoka is purely light sided, but like Ahsoka, he is no big fan of the Jedi Order's rules or mannerisms, but still believes in their mission and takes on a mentor role and at the same time, he is not afraid to use Dark Side powers but treads carefully) while still retaining a signature humility "Do no harm but take no shit"-stance. I think Kyle's characterization is spot on. Many people seem to hate on Jedi Academy's missions and story. Nearly a few days later, I again made a LS playthrough. And DARN, it was basically the most fun I ever had with a video game! I played through all missions, skipping nothing, and I had a blast with force drain, the red saber stance, just ripping Sith. ![]() Then however, I started a purely Dark Side playthrough, most importantly with the realistic saber mod. Now, I already really liked the game and the campaign, which btw has a great German language dub. I finally finished the campaign November 2022. I already played it here or there in December 2017, I played a bit of the campaign and A TON of Vjun MP botmatches, then nearly finished the campaign July 2018, July 2019, December 2019 etc. I really can't put into words how much I love Jedi Academy.
